Coastal Navigation for Recreational Boaters
Class Dates: Saturday, March 4, 11, and 18
Learn how to navigate back to port when darkness or fog catches you by surprise. This class will help you safely plot your way around using charts and compasses. Each student (or pair) will receive a copy of Chapman's Piloting & Seamanship text, current marine charts of Massachusetts Bay and Cape Cod Bay, a divider, and a parallel ruler.
The class is limited to five students (or student pairs) to ensure that the instructors can give adequate personal attention to all during the practice exercises.
Boating Safely Class
Pick one Saturday - 4/29, 5/20 or 6/17
Boat America is a boating certificate class that offers an in-depth and interesting boating safety course, and provides the knowledge needed to obtain a boating certificate.
These beginner boating class will give you the knowledge needed to obtain a boat license or safety certification in MA (and NH). Many boat insurance companies will offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete.
Participants will receive a course certificate, wallet card at successful completion, and a passing grade on the exam. Junior operator licenses will be submitted to the state that allows 12-16 years to operate a powerboat and 16-17 years old to operate jet skis.
These seminars include a morning break, a one-hour lunch break, and a short break before the exam.

TOPICS INCLUDE
Introduction to Boating – Types of powerboats, boating vocabulary, sailboats, paddleboats, powering boats, and engine types.
Boating Law – Boat registration, regulations, hull identification numbers, required safety equipment, Federal boating law, state boating law, and reporting accidents.
Safety Equipment – Life jackets, fire extinguishers, sound-producing devices, visual distress signals, anchors, and other safety equipment.
Safe Operation and Navigation – Buoys and beacons aids in navigation, navigation rules, docking, and the dangers of alcohol on the water.
Boating Emergencies – Hypothermia, boating accidents, man overboard, capsizing, emergency radio calls, carbon monoxide dangers, and weather.
Trailering – Types of trailers, lights, hitches, towing a trailer.
Sports and Boating – Water-skiing, hunting and hunting gear, PWC operation, and other boating tips.
These programs have limited availability, and pre-registration is required one week before each program.
Refund Policy
- Any programs canceled by Cohasset Recreation will result in full refunds and account credits. Participants withdrawing at least 1 week before the program date will receive a refund/credit less a $5 processing fee per participant. Cohasset Recreation will waive the processing fee for any medical-related withdrawal/refund requests. All refund/withdrawal requests must be in writing to tcarroll@cohassetma.org.
