Michael Curtin Xtreme Memorial Scholarship
The challenge: operate a summer program for teens that teens would actually want to attend. In 2006, Hanover Parks and Rec created such a program following the example of Norwell's field trip model. The need was there, but the most crucial to the success of the program was to hire the best director and staff. Hanover did that by hiring Mike Curtin as its first director. Mike was a hugely popular teacher at North Quincy and a legendary recreation program leader with Quincy Recreation. The Hanover Teen Extreme program was an instant hit, operating at full capacity as teens enjoyed weekly trips and spent their field days playing “Curty games.”
Mike followed Ted Carroll to Cohasset Rec in 2008, and Cohasset’s Summer Xtreme was born. The program was a South Shore favorite in its early years, bringing together children from seven surrounding communities. Our neighbors in those towns followed our model and created their own programs as Summer Xtreme remained a hit with Cohasset teens.
Mike died ten years ago this year in April 2013, and a field trip does not go by without us remembering him and how he would have wanted Cohasset Recreation to represent the town.
This scholarship fund will honor Mike and be given to an Xtreme staff member representing the program and town of Cohasset with the same principles Mike embodied. Mike made sure we were prepared for each trip and left each location better than how we found it. This is how we honor him.
Summer Playground Program
55 years ago, the Town appropriated money to conduct a summer program for Cohasset Youth. Although recreation is considered a “non-essential” budgetary item, the Playground Program has survived. We have made it through these decades because of the second tradition: Cohasset’s local businesses and organizations have given back to our community via support of this program. This program has balanced two very distinct factors; an affordable summer option for all Cohasset parents and a program that is mandated to be financially self-supporting. We strive to run a program that is unlike any other Recreation Department summer program where we provide a safe and fun experience with countless enhancements such as weekly entertainment, field trips, and daily special events. We are able to do this for a very low seven-week fee that is comparable to one week at other for-profit camps. Over 500 children each year have taken part in this program, generations of families and even our staff, including myself, are former campers. While we know that local businesses have many opportunities for sponsorships for worthy causes in Cohasset and limited dollars for this purpose. We feel that our sponsorship program impacts directly, hundreds of children and families. By becoming a sponsor for our program your organization will be on the back of over 500 t-shirts and will be listed on our fall town-wide brochure and featured on our website. Further, local news media will print, from time to time, your business as a sponsor.
Summer Concert Series
The Cohasset Summer Concert Series is located on Cohasset Common. All performances are free, open to the public, and handicap accessible. Concerts are funded through the generosity of the South Shore Playhouse Associates, Inc. The concerts are supported in part by a grant from the Cohasset Cultural Council, a local agency that is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
Thanks-for-Giving 5K Road Race to benefit Cohasset Recreation & The Clark Chatterton Memorial Fund
The Cohasset Recreation Department and the Clark Chatterton Memorial Fund are pleased to announce the 12th Annual Thanks-for-giving 5k Road Race on Thanksgiving morning. As one of Cohasset’s businesses, you are invited to join us as a sponsor of the race with your name or logo appearing on the back of over 800 t-shirts. All of our sponsors will be highlighted on all race information and printed press releases. Sponsors, depending on sponsorship amount, would receive complimentary t-shirts. Revenues are vital to both organizations helping to keep Cohasset the very fine community it has always been. The Recreation Department and the Clark Chatterton Memorial Fund will utilize your tax-deductible donation towards future programming and improvements that might otherwise not be financially possible.
