Boating Safety Classes

Boat America is a boating certificate class that offers an in-depth and engaging boating safety course and provides the knowledge needed to obtain a boating certificate.
Upon successful completion of the course and exam, participants are eligible for the MA State Boating Certificate, which is now required for ALL motorboat operators in Massachusetts, effective April 1, 2026. The Safety Certificate also permits Junior Operators aged 12-16 to operate a powerboat and 16-17 to operate jet skis without adult supervision.
Many boat insurance companies may offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete this course.
These seminars include a morning break, a one-hour lunch break, and a short break before the exam.

TOPICS INCLUDE
Introduction to Boating – Types of powerboats, boating vocabulary, sailboats, paddleboats, powering boats, and engine types.
Boating Law – Boat registration, regulations, hull identification numbers, required safety equipment, Federal boating law, state boating law, and reporting accidents.
Safety Equipment – Life jackets, fire extinguishers, sound-producing devices, visual distress signals, anchors, and other safety equipment.
Safe Operation and Navigation – Buoys and beacons aids in navigation, navigation rules, docking, and the dangers of alcohol on the water.
Boating Emergencies – Hypothermia, boating accidents, man overboard, capsizing, emergency radio calls, carbon monoxide dangers, and weather.
Trailering – Types of trailers, lights, hitches, towing a trailer.
Sports and Boating – Water-skiing, hunting and hunting gear, PWC operation, and other boating tips.
These programs have limited availability, and pre-registration is required one week before each program.
